Event Description

This course aims to explore the protective and motivating factors around suicidal ideations, addresses the spectrum of suicidal ideations, discusses active versus passive ideation, focuses on safety planning, documentation, and how to perform an active rescue. This course will also focus on the intersectionality of client identities which may play a role in rates of suicidal ideation.

Learning Objectives
1. Differentiate between active and passive suicidal ideation.
2. Determine level of risk from minimal, moderate, high, and severe.
3. Identify and craft a safety plan to permit clients to utilize internal and external coping skills and address higher levels of care during a crisis.
4. Learn how to broach the topic of suicide and appropriately document assessment.
5. Identify high risk groups and clients based on intersecting identities.

About the Trainer, James Ahearn LPC
James has been a practicing clinician for 6 years. He acquired his Masters in Education from UMSL and has worked as a suicide clinician for Behavioral Health Response. James is the clinical director of Sonder Counseling and teaches as an adjunct professor. James has taught courses on prevention at UMSL and has done trainings on suicide assessment, prevention, and intervention for several non-profits in the St. Louis area. James also works as a lawyer and managing partner for a small firm in Clayton.
