Event Description: Clinical mental health practice carries risk of secondary traumatic stress and burnout for therapists. In this session we’ll discuss warning signs and managing impact using the evidence-informed model, Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT). Developed by Dr. Brian Miller, CE-CERT focuses on five components clinicians can use to support their own emotional well-being while addressing difficult content during therapy sessions. Unlike other self-care strategies, CE-CERT is designed to be used in real-time, allowing clinicians to develop and implement concrete skills within their therapeutic practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify at least three signs of secondary traumatic stress and burnout.
  2. Participants will be able to describe the impacts of STS and burnout on professional work.
  3. Participants will learn the 5 components of the CE-CERT model as well as skill applications for each component.
  4. Participants will identify potential next steps for incorporating CE-CERT into their practice.
